5 Lighting Trends to Get Excited About in 2023

If you haven’t heard already, lighting is claiming its rightful place as THE statement element in 2023 home design! Gone are the days of the builder grade boob lights and the chandelier/fan combo of the 80s. Investing in high quality, appropriately scaled lighting is the easiest way to instantly change the look and feel of a room. Think of light fixtures as the jewelry of a home. Your home deserves a Ben Affleck proposing to J Lo kind of diamond, right? Ok, perhaps that might be out of reach, but we can certainly do better than Home Depot builder grade sadness. In 2023, lighting is taking center stage, with designers and homeowners choosing fixtures that are truly the star of the show and finding ways to incorporate a variety of lighting in fresh new ways.

Here are my predictions for 2023 lighting trends!

Vintage Fixtures

The brass vintage pulley fixture takes center stage in this design by Heidi Callier, pairing seamlessly with the beadboard and the built-in cabinetry, creating the sense that these elements have been living in harmony together in this house forever. I am also dying over the little lamp with the fabric shade on the counter in the background…must add this to my list of wants!

My heart skipped a beat or two when I saw this image by Jessica Helgerson Interior Design. The delicate brass wall sconces, the ruffled milk glass shades on the linear pendant fixture, the Nickey Kehoe scallop sconces, all paired perfectly with the vintage wood dresser….it screams lady of the house! This is the closet that all my dreams are made of.

I love this shot because we get a glimpse of the amazing layers of lighting in three separate rooms by Heidi Callier. The vintage chandeliers above the tables are just so unique and I love how they each mirror the shape of the table they illuminate. Of course, Heidi also incorporated wall sconces into the design of the rooms and layered a table lamp on the buffet in the background. Layering lighting at different heights around the room diffuses light and creates a welcoming glow.

Ruffled lamp shades have been hot for a while now and this one is perfectly paired with a vintage floor lamp that adds so much character to this room by The Misfit House.

Ruffled Shades

Jake Arnold is a designer to the stars, so you know if he is embracing an aesthetic it is soon to be replicated by designers and homeowners alike. I have noticed ruffled shades covering fixtures in rooms by many of my favorite designers lately and I think we will continue to see more of this look in 2023.

Jessica Helgerson always nails the wallpaper/paint combo and I love her use of color in an eye-catching but elegant way. The delicate ruffled light adds the perfect complement to the floral wallpaper.

Only Heidi Callier could make this stone fireplace look appealing. I love how the ruffled light juxtaposes beautifully with the rustic stone and of course she brings in the most unexpected fabrics and colors in the furnishings. She is truly a master of the craft!

A tiered option above the bath in this room by Studio Mcgee keeps the room feeling light and ethereal.

Flushmount Groupings

Of all the 2023 lighting trends, this is the one that I am most excited about! No need to install one million recessed lights in the ceiling of your home anymore. Just add groups of smaller semi-flushmount fixtures. How incredible is this grouping of fixtures tucked away in the dining alcove designed by Amber Lewis? So new! So cool! Just like the designer herself!

Studio McGee opted to forgo one central light fixture in this living space and instead used four identical globe lights to illuminate the space. Added bonus that this will disperse light evenly around the room!

Kitchens are traditionally outfitted with recessed task lighting, but Heidi Callier uses two bare-bulbed fixtures to achieve the same result, with a much better visual aesthetic.

Proof that the flushmount groupings can be used in any room in the house in lieu of a traditional pendant. The milk glass shades perfectly complement the vintage inspired tile floor in this laundry room designed by Whittney Parkinson.

Range Alcove Sconces

The queen of kitchen design, Jean Stoffer, has brought the range alcove to the forefront in the last few years and her designs often include sconces mounted inside the alcove. In 2023, look for this trend to continue, as more designers and homeowners catch on to the charm of this unexpected lighting choice.

Chris Loves Julia chose the most incredible sconces for their range alcove, with mirrors to reflect the glow of the exposed bulbs and a circular shape that breaks up all of the hard lines and angles found in a kitchen.

Yond Interiors used the cutest little sconces mounted to the top of the range alcove to illuminate the stovetop and I love the quiet simplicity of this entire design.

We get a three-for-one in this kitchen, as Jean Stoffer incorporates sconces in the range alcove, a pair of flushmounts in the background and three statement pendants over the kitchen island. The mix of materials and finishes in this kitchen are modern while also remaining completely timeless.

Statement Fixtures

In 2023, grand light fixtures are taking center stage and no one does it better than Amber Lewis. This incredible custom chandelier is stunning and it creates the perfect focal point in the entryway to the home.

I love how April Tomlin chose to group three textural lights in this bedroom, rather than opting for one large fixture to fill the high ceilings.

If you are going to do a neutral color palette like this dining room by Sean Andereson, add drama with sculptural furniture and an oversized graphic light fixture!

There are so many incredibly brave design choices in this room by Ashley Montgomery, but I am in love with every single one of them! The chandelier, with its oversized green shades, has a traditional quality that contrasts perfectly with the modern aesthetic of the green chairs.

Let me know your thoughts on what you hope to see more of in 2023 lighting design!
